Freedom Tower from the Staten Island Ferry, 2012
I’m fascinated by this building. There aren’t many modern buildings that carry the weight that the Freedom Tower does. Would you be able to tell someone what the old building down the street looked like before that new set of condos replaced it on your block? Maybe. But can you tell someone what was on the site of the Freedom Tower before the Freedom Tower was there? Almost a definite yes. And I’d guess that a good deal of Americans can, too. I’ve grown up in a city that is at an apex of transformation, but I think it’s fair to say that there’s no other building that’s been built that so many people around the world have some kind of connection to. We all know why that building is there. We understand its significance, and the significance of its name. We’ve been watching it grow steadily, and it recently became the tallest building in the city. When it’s completed, it will replace the Willis Tower in Chicago as the tallest building in the country (1,776 feet). And, I would imagine, most people will know its story for generations to come.
